The Peepul Tree
The Peepul Tree bears witness to the felling of an ancient tree in a city in India. Surrounded by roaring traffic, children playing, cows wandering by, and worshippers at a Hindu shrine, the camera records the co-existence of chaos and focus. Amidst all the activity seven men, equipped with saws and axes, arrive at the scene and, seemingly oblivious to the turmoil around them, dismember the tree until it has finally been reduced to a stack of wood. The film witnesses a fascinating and painful moment when the connection between the past and a possible future story is terminated.
